An unidentified woman and her little baby have been spotted at the Lekki Toll Gate, observing what appears like a memorial for victims of the #EndSARS protest who were brutally killed there on the night of October 20, 2020.
Recall that on October 20, 2022, after about two weeks of relentless protest against the atrocities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of police notorious for tortures and extrajudicial murders, the federal government drafted the military to suppress the protest at the behest of the Lagos State government.
Many young Nigerians wrapped in Nigerian flag and singing the National Anthem at the Lekki Toll Gate, were shot at by troops drafted to disperse them.
For many, the Toll Gate has become the symbol of that struggle, to gather there every October 20 to remember the dead. But the police have banned any form of gathering at the Toll Gate.
There are also no less than 15 #EndSARS protesters who were arrested in 2020, still being arbitrarily detained three years after, according to Amnesty International. The memorial is also aimed at highlighting the plight of those being detained under trumped up charges.
Amnesty International said the Nigerian authorities have filed such trumped-up charges including theft, arson, and possession of unlawful firearms to justify their continuous detention of the activists.
