In a significant development for women’s soccer, Chelsea Women’s manager, Emma Hayes, has been officially confirmed as the new head coach of the United States women’s national soccer team. The 47-year-old will continue her role with the Blues until the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season before assuming the helm of the USWNT in preparation for the 2024 Olympics.
Hayes takes over from Vlatko Andonovski, who departed following a disappointing 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign, where the USWNT exited in the last 16—an outcome considered their worst performance in the tournament’s history.
During her remarkable 11-year tenure with Chelsea, the Englishwoman has amassed an impressive record, securing six Women’s Super League titles and five FA Cups. Hayes’ accolades include being named FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year in 2021, and she has received both an MBE and OBE for her outstanding contributions to football.
Expressing her gratitude for the new role, Hayes remarked, “This is a huge honor to be given the opportunity to coach the most incredible team in world football history. I’ve dreamed about coaching the USA for a long time, so this is a dream come true. I know there is work to do to get this team back to the top, but I am ready for the challenge.”
Hayes now faces the task of rejuvenating the USWNT and propelling them back to the summit of women’s soccer following their World Cup setback. Her innovative coaching style and proven winning mentality are anticipated to inject new energy into the squad as they prepare for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The appointment marks a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the USWNT, and fans eagerly await the impact of Emma Hayes on the team’s journey toward reclaiming their elite status in international women’s football.
