The former senator who represented Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has continued to support the non-confirmation of Nasir El-Rufai as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
In a new tweet against the confirmation of El-Rufai, Sani said a man who publicly celebrated the death of former Nigeria’s President, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, should not be trusted by any president.
In 2017, during a political rally, El-Rufai had claimed that Yar’Adua, who died in office in May 2010, fought him and ended up in the grave. He also claimed that the past President Goodluck Jonathan was voted out of power for fighting him too.
Shehu Sani at the time, petitioned then President Muhammadu Buhari to probe El-Rufai for making those comments.
In the wake of the senate stepping down El-Rufai’s confirmation, Sani has resuscitated the issue.
In a tweet, he said: “The Man who PUBLICLY boasted and gloated that he fought President Yar’adua and sent him to his grave, shouldn’t be trusted by any President now or in the future.”
There are also reports that Nasir El-Rufai may reject his ministerial appointment even if he is eventually cleared by the Senate.
According to a report by Peoples Gazette, El-Rufai has said that he is not going to meet with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to lobby for security clearance.
He believes that Ribadu lacks the political stature to unilaterally withhold his ministerial nomination.
El-Rufai has also said he will wait until he is officially confirmed by the Senate before announcing his decision to reject the appointment. He wants to show the Nigerian public that there were no justifiable grounds for the hold-up.
