Egypt appoints all-time top scorer as new national team coach

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA), has appointed legendary striker Hossam Hassan as the new coach of the national team. The 57-year-old replaces Rui Vitoria, who was sacked after Egypt exited the Africa Cup of Nations at the last-16 stage.

Hassan has frequently voiced his desire to coach his country in recent years but was often overlooked due to his fiery temperament. He has had several disciplinary issues throughout his coaching career, including attacking a photographer and breaking a VAR monitor. However, Hassan is also credited with helping smaller clubs overachieve.

As a player, Hassan enjoyed great success at club level with Al Ahly and Zamalek, winning numerous domestic honours. For the national team, he won three Africa Cup of Nations titles and scored 68 goals in 176 appearances, a record tally 14 clear of current Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.

Hassan retired in 2008, after a decorated playing career spanning over two decades. He immediately went into coaching, taking charge of several Egyptian clubs over the last 15 years. However, his managerial career has so far lacked silverware.

The EFA stated that they initially considered foreign candidates. Still, they ultimately opted to appoint Hassan quickly after sacking Vitoria. Hassan’s twin brother, Ibrahim, was also named the national team’s new director.
