Nigeria’s female national basketball team, D’Tigress, has advanced to the Women’s AfroBasket championship final.
They won the semifinal game against the tournament’s hosts Rwanda 79-48 to advance to the final for the fourth consecutive time.
The hosts were defeated 22-6 in the opening period of the match by the Rena Wakama girls. Nigeria was in the lead at the half with 26 points.
But in the third quarter, Rwanda cut the margin in half by scoring 16 points. The final score was 58-35 in favour of Nigeria.
In the final period, Nigeria maintained their lead to win the match.
Senegal, which defeated Mali in the other semifinal, will play the D’Tigress on Saturday as the two sides battle to emerge as champions of the womens’ Afrobasket tourney.
If Nigeria wins the championship, it will be their sixth overall and fourth consecutive continental triumph.
With their victory on Thursday, the D’Tigress have earned a spot in the Paris 2024 Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
