DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa
The Department of State Services (DSS) has officially acknowledged the release of Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Dr. Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications for the DSS, made this confirmation in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.
Afunanya stated that the former head of the EFCC was released on the night of Wednesday, without delving into the specifics of the circumstances leading to his release.
The statement read, “DSS confirms the release of former EFCC chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa a few hours ago, today, Oct. 25.”
It is worth noting that Abdulrasheed Bawa had been in the custody of the DSS since June 14, following his suspension by the Federal Government.
During this period, the Secret Police had not publicly disclosed any charges against him or provided details regarding the nature of the allegations against him that warranted his arrest and detention.
His suspension was initially announced in a statement issued by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). The statement mentioned that Bawa’s suspension was based on serious allegations of misconduct in office. It was further specified that Bawa had been instructed to promptly hand over the responsibilities of his office to the Director of Operations within the EFCC, who would oversee the office of the commission’s chairman until the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
