Democracy Day: Lagosians protest in Ikeja, but security agencies suppress Abuja activists

Nigerians who are dissatisfied with the state of affairs in the country are protesting in Lagos, denouncing government policies that they say have ushered in a state of hunger across the land.

According to placards of the protest, the policies of President Bola Tinubu’s government is the primary motivation for the hardship.

In several pictures and videos,  demonstrators carried different placards calling for immediate reversal of some of Tinubu’s government policies.

One of the protesters and a social activist, Francis Nwapa wrote: “We called for it and we are on the street in Ikeja under the bridge. The tyrannical and oppressive government of @officialABAT must be shown the way out. We are hungry and angry.”

In Abuja, the protest was suppressed by security agents who took over strategic locations by ensuring that Nigerians did not assemble.

But pro-democracy activist Deji Adeyanju came out with a few others to protest in the federal Capital.

The DSS had earlier warned against any form of protest.

In a post on his X handle, Deji said he came out for the protest in defiance of the DSS order.

He said:  “The DSS and other security agencies do not have the right to tell Nigerians when or how to protest. Special appreciation to all Nigerians who came out despite the threat to protest in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna and other parts of the country today. #June12Protest.”
