Manchester United’s hopes in the UEFA Champions League came to a disappointing end with a 1-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. Kingsley Coman secured the lone goal in the second half, relegating United to the bottom of Group A.
The defeat carries further disappointment for United, as it means they will not qualify for the Europa League, marking a dismal conclusion to their European campaign this season. This occurrence marks only the fourth time in history that an English Premier League club has finished at the bottom of their UCL group.
Ahead of the match, United required a victory and a favorable outcome in the FC Copenhagen vs. Galatasaray match to have any chance of progressing to the knockout stages. However, Copenhagen’s win rendered the result at Old Trafford inconsequential.
Bayern Munich had already secured the top spot in Group A before the game. Despite fielding a rotated side, the German champions exhibited superior quality against a lackluster United team. United struggled to register more than one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes, leading to boos from the Old Trafford crowd at the end of another disappointing performance.
This defeat adds more pressure on manager Erik ten Hag amid a challenging season leading the 20-time English champions. United now faces a daunting fixture against rivals Liverpool in the English Premier League on Sunday.
