Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 2023 presidential election, has urged Nigerians to take charge of their own destiny, asserting that the Supreme Court alone cannot deliver the genuine democracy they aspire to achieve.
During an appearance on an Arise TV broadcast on Monday, Datti issued a clarion call to his fellow countrymen, challenging them to rise up and actively advocate for the democracy they desire.
“Even as I speak to you, Nigerians are not fully prepared for this. Some of my former associates might label it as treason and the like, but I’m here to educate Nigerians. Stand up for your rights; no Supreme Court ruling will hand you democracy,” Datti emphasized during the interview.
Datti emphasized that Nigerians possess the authority to hold non-performing governments accountable and stressed that the ultimate power and sovereignty rest with the people.
These comments were made in the wake of the Labor Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, criticizing the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold President Bola Tinubu’s election victory. Obi contended that the Supreme Court’s ruling had eroded citizens’ trust in the judiciary.
It’s worth recalling that in October, the Supreme Court dismissed cases brought by Peter Obi and his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, challenging President Bola Tinubu’s election victory.
