On Monday, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery received its fourth shipment of one million barrels of bonny light crude oil, supplied by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited. The $20 billion refinery is anticipating the arrival of the fifth crude oil shipment soon, according to a statement from the company. The refinery, touted as the world’s largest single-train refinery, had earlier received three shipments of crude oil. Officials of the company indicated that the refinery is set to commence the production of refined Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) and aviation fuel (JetA1) this month.
The Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Akin Omole, stated earlier that the refinery would receive approximately four million crude oil shipments before the end of 2023. He mentioned that the remaining two shipments were expected by early January 2024, positioning the refinery for production. Once the six million barrels are fully delivered, it will facilitate the initial run of the refinery, leading to the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas, before progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol).
With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the Dangote refinery is designed to meet 100% of Nigeria’s requirements for all refined petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, kerosene, and jet fuel. The facility also has a surplus of each product for export. The refinery boasts a self-sufficient marine facility capable of handling the largest vessels globally. After receiving the first consignment of crude, Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, expressed delight at the achievement and emphasized the focus on ramping up the refinery to its full capacity in the coming months.
