Drambi Vandi, a suspended assistant superintendent of police was sentenced to death by hanging on Monday by the Lagos High Court, which sat at Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island, for the murder of Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, a lawyer from Lagos.
Justice Ibironke Harrison declared in her judgement against the ASP for the murder of the expecting lawyer that the prosecution’s case had been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
“The court finds the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead.” the judge while delivering her verdict said.
The judge also ruled that the erring officer shot his victim at close-range
PoliticsNow, recalls that Vandi was charged with murder in connection with the death of the expectant lawyer and appeared before the State High Court.
The ASP shot and murdered the 41-year-old pregnant lawyer on Christmas Day 2022 at the Ajah underbridge checkpoint.
On social media, many Nigerians expressed indignation over her death and urged that the cop who fatally shot the attorney be held accountable.
The incompetent officer, who was assigned to the Ajiwe police division in the Ajah region, was suspended two days after the occurrence in response to public uproar from the state’s citizens.
Since the court case’s beginning in January, the spouse, sister, police armourer, pathologist, and seven other witnesses have all testified against the defendant.
While giving a testimony in his defence before the court, Mr. Vandi asserted that the bullet brought to court and alleged to have killed the dead did not come from the firearm he was carrying on the day of the incident.
