A Chief Magistrate Court in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State has sentenced controversial street-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, to three months in prison for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
The court, however, gave him the option to pay a fine totaling ₦30,000.
Portable was arrested in March 2023 after a viral video showed him assaulting a police inspector and obstructing officers attempting to serve him an arrest warrant.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, told the court that the incident occurred on November 18, 2022, around 11:00 a.m. in Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District.
According to the charge sheet, Portable and others at large conspired to commit felony assault, an offense punishable under Section 517 of the Ogun State Criminal Code Law, 2006. The singer was also charged with the unlawful assault of one Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi, in violation of Section 351 of the same law.
Additionally, Portable was accused of stealing musical equipment on various occasions in 2022, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a Studio 2 interface connection cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone—offenses under Sections 384, 383, and 390 of the Ogun State Criminal Code.
Delivering judgment, Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo found Portable guilty on Counts 1 and 2. He was sentenced to one month in prison with an option of a ₦10,000 fine for Count 1, and two months in prison with a ₦20,000 fine option for Count 2.
