The commander of Hisbah, the moral police of the Kano state government, has resigned in protest of a comment by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Yusuf, the governor of Kano State yesterday tackled the Hisbah under Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa by treating young people who allegedly violated its moral code as animals.
The governor said: “They treat young people suspected of misdemeanour like animals. It is inappropriate to tie up and throw suspects into an open van like an animal.”
The comment of the governor followed the arrest of a popular social media (Tik Toker) influencer, Murja Kunya, penultimate week.
Mr Daura announced his resignation in a 2:53 second video shared on his page on Friday, attributing his resignation to some uncomplimentary comments made against him by the governor.
He, however, apologised to the governor for his wrongdoing.
“I’m here in Kaduna attending a retreat organised by the Kano State House of Assembly, on how to implement the law mandating compulsory medical tests before marriage as applicable in other states.
“Soon after, I saw some disturbing reports from Kano State that weakened my spirit. I have been making efforts for Hisbah to fight indecency and promote moral values among indigenes of the state.
“I tried my best to engage actors and actresses. I offered them advice. We had a deep conversation on how to tackle movies that were against our culture and religious beliefs.
“I also held a meeting with TikTokers, and my directors and I even contributed money from our private pocket as a token for them to purchase mobile data.
“I also invited Murja [Kunya] and her colleagues, I did everything possible to ensure they did the right thing.
“But some of them dismissed our advice, and continued to live an unholy lifestyle, which is having a negative influence on the morals of our citizens.
“We tried our best to do the needful. However, I am appealing to the governor to forgive me for my mistakes and the utterances he made against Commander of Kano moral police, Hisbah, resigns over Governor Yusuf’s comment
