Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Jorrel Hato from Ajax on a seven-year contract. The 19-year-old Netherlands international joins for a fee exceeding €40 million, with a sell-on clause included in the agreement.
Hato, who made 111 senior appearances for Ajax after rising through their Academy, is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders.
Hato expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating: “I’m very excited, I’m so happy to be here. I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that.”
His versatility allows him to play both left-back and centre-back, adding depth to Enzo Maresca’s defensive options.
The transfer continues Chelsea’s active summer recruitment, following the arrivals of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens, among others.
Several high-profile departures, including Kepa Arrizabalaga, Joao Felix, and Jadon Sancho, have freed up space in the squad for new signings like Hato.
Analysts highlight Hato’s technical ability and composure in possession, traits honed at Ajax. Last season, he recorded an 89 per cent pass completion rate in the Eredivisie, among the best for full-backs.
While strong in one-on-one situations, his aerial game remains an area for development as he adapts to English Premier League demands.
Hato’s arrival reinforces Chelsea’s strategy of investing in young talent with high potential.
His experience at Ajax and for the Netherlands senior team suggests he could make an immediate impact, providing competition for players like Marc Cucurella and Levi Colwill.
