Champions League: Kane scores four as Bayern put nine past Dinamo Zagreb

Harry Kane scored four goals, including three penalties, to lead Bayern Munich to a 9-2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday.

In a game that featured the joint second-most goals in a Champions League match, Bayern struck three times in the first half with Kane – who also scored a hat-trick in their Bundesliga win over Holstein Kiel on Saturday – converting a 19th minute spot-kick. Raphaël Guerreiro then drilled home from a superb Jamal Musiala assist in the 33rd minute, and Michael Olise added another five minutes later.

Vincent Kompany’s side looked in total control but the visitors fought back by scoring twice in two minutes just after half-time, with Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara on target. Bayern responded with two of their own in four minutes – Kane and Olise both adding their second goals – to put the Croatians firmly in their place.

Despite holding a 5-2 lead, Bayern kept pushing and Kane struck twice more from the penalty spot in the 73rd and 78th minutes. The former Tottenham striker now has 33 career Champions League goals, overtaking Wayne Rooney as England’s highest scorer in the competition.

Leroy Sané added another in the 85th before fellow substitute Leon Goretzka headed in their record-breaking ninth goal in stoppage time. Bayern are the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League game, with the aggregate total of 11 goals only surpassed by Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw in 2016.

“Whenever you’re in a conversation with Wayne Rooney, it means you’re doing something well,” Kane told Prime Video. “He’s one of the greatest English players and one of the best there was in the game. It’s a nice achievement.”

“It’s the first time I’ve ever had three penalties in one game. It was a different feeling for me, but to score four goals is fantastic,” the 31-year-old added. “To help the team in any way possible is important. Whether they’re penalties or normal finishes, I’ll take them all. It was a great night for us.”

Earlier, Juventus beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 on their Champions League return, with Kenan Yildiz claiming a piece of history with the first goal in the new ‘league phase’.

The teenage Turkey winger gave Juve the lead after 21 minutes with a stunning curling shot from just inside the box, leaving PSV goalkeeper Joël Drommel helpless as the ball went in off the inside of the post. Yildiz, who is 19, also eclipsed Alessandro Del Piero as Juventus’ youngest ever Champions League scorer.

Weston McKennie doubled the hosts’ advantage six minutes later, netting inside the right-hand post from close range to put Juve in command. Nicolás González wrapped up the win after the break, tapping in from Dusan Vlahovic’s pass, before Ismael Saibari pulled a goal back for PSV in stoppage time.

Juventus have returned to Europe’s elite club competition following a one-year absence. They missed out last season for the first time since 2011-12 after having points docked in a case centred on the club’s transfer dealings, and then being banned from all European competition for breaching Uefa club licensing and FFP rules.

Sporting eased to a 2-0 win over Lille, who had England midfielder Angel Gomes sent off after picking up two yellow cards. Viktor Gyökeres opened the scoring for the hosts in Lisbon after latching on to Pedro Gonçalves’ delightful pass in the 38th minute.

Two minutes later, Gomes was shown a second yellow card for tripping Gyökeres, having already being booked earlier for a push on Francisco Trinçao. In the second half, Zeno Debast unleashed a superb long-range effort into the top right corner to seal victory for Rúben Amorim’s side.
