Real Madrid dropped valuable points in the La Liga title race on Sunday, as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Rayo Vallecano. The result leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s side three points clear at the top, but second-placed Girona can close the gap with a win on Monday.
The league leaders made a fast start at Vallecas, taking an early lead through Joselu in the third minute of play. However, they were pegged back before half-time when Raul de Tomas converted a penalty after VAR spotted a handball by Eduardo Camavinga.
The second half was a drab affair with few clear openings. Dani Carvajal’s late red card for two bookable offences rather summed up a frustrated Madrid performance.
Los Blancos remain at the La Liga summit but will be disappointed not to make their dominance count in this away tie. They controlled the early stages and created numerous chances, but became somewhat lacklustre after conceding.
New Rayo Vallecano boss Inigo Perez will be delighted to take a point from his first match against the mighty Real Madrid. His side showed plenty of attacking endeavour and were good value for their draw.
