The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed a substantial boost in prize money for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast. The championship’s winning team will now receive $7 million, marking a 40% increase from previous editions.
Dr. Patrice Motsepe, CAF President, highlighted the organization’s significant progress in enhancing the prize money for AFCON and other major competitions over the past two years. The runner-up will now be awarded $4 million, with the two semi-finalists each receiving $2.5 million. Additionally, the four quarter-finalists will get $1.3 million per team.
Motsepe expressed confidence that a portion of the increased prize money would contribute to football development and benefit various stakeholders, including Member Associations in managing their administrations.
This rise underscores CAF’s dedication to fostering the sport’s growth throughout Africa by providing incentives for success in its premier national team competition. As the 2023 tournament approaches, the augmented prize money is anticipated to add excitement, encouraging participating Football Associations to invest in youth development and infrastructure
