Justice Nicholas Oweibo of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced a businessman, Tochukwu Agbo, to a term of two years imprisonment over illegal export of 29.10 kg of Cannabis Sativa.
The defendant was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on a one-count charge of illegal export of the banned narcotics.
He pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
After his plea, the prosecutor, Mr Augustine Nwagu, reviewed the facts of the case before the court and tendered several exhibits in support of his case .
Consequently, he urged the court to proceed and convict the defendant based on his plea as well as evidences adduced by prosecution.
The court consequently, convicted the defendant as charged .
In his verdict thereafter, Justice Oweibo sentenced the convict to a term of two years imprisonment with an option of fine of N1.5 million.
According to the charge, the defendant was arrested on October 25, during the outward clearance of passengers onboard a Qatar Airline flight to Doha.
The prosecution said Tochukwu Agbo was arrested at the departure hall, terminal 11 of the Murtala Mohamed Airport, with about 29.10kg of cannabis sativa alias hemp, was recovered from him .
He said that the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30 Law of the Federation, 2004.
