Following a goalless encounter with the Republic of Ireland Women’s Football team on Monday, the Super Falcons of Nigeria advanced to the second round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Falcons finished second in their group behind co-hosts Australia, who defeated Canada 4-0 in the other closing fixture of group B.
Both teams engaged in counter-pressing football, but their efforts to score a goal during the game were largely unsuccessful.
In the first half, Asisat Oshoala had a chance to put Nigeria ahead, but her shot was inches wide of the goalpost.
Ireland also had a series of opportunities, but a stellar performance from keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie saved the day for the Falcons.
Both matches were played in two stadiums in Australia at the same time. Nigeria awaits its opponent in the second round as the competition progresses.
