Barcelona and Spain midfielder, Aitana Bonmati, has claimed the 2023 Best FIFA Women’s Player award. The 25-year-old adds the accolade to an already impressive list of individual honours, having previously won the World Cup Golden Ball, UEFA Women’s Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or Feminin.
Bonmati beat fellow nominees Linda Caicedo and Jenni Hermoso to the prize. She was the leading favourite after a stellar 2023, which saw her win the World Cup with Spain and secure a historic treble with Barcelona at club level. The Spanish international played a key role in both triumphs.
“It’s been an incredible and unique year that I will remember for the rest of my life,” Bonmati said when collecting her award. “I owe this to the team that I play with: Barcelona and the national team. Without my teammates, I would not be here picking up these awards.”
The midfielder also thanked her family and friends for their support. Bonmati is the latest Spanish winner of the Best FIFA Women’s Player, succeeding her Barcelona teammate, Alexia Putellas, who claimed it in both 2021 and 2022.
Previous winners include Lucy Bronze (2020), Marta, Megan Rapinoe, Lieke Martens and Carli Lloyd. At just 25 years of age, Bonmati will be hoping this is just the first of many individual accolades still to come her way.
