Bayer Leverkusen secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Qarabag to advance to the next round of the Europa League, courtesy of a last-minute penalty converted by Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface.
In pursuit of securing their place in the knockout stages, the Bundesliga team traveled to Azerbaijan for the crucial clash on Thursday evening. Despite Xabi Alonso’s squad entering the game on a 10-match winning streak, they faced challenges in breaking down a resilient Qarabag.
The first half concluded without any goals, and early in the second period, Boniface missed a notable opportunity to take the lead, firing wide when well-positioned. The Nigerian forward also had a headed effort saved as the match remained deadlocked at 0-0 with less than ten minutes to go.
In the 89th minute, Leverkusen was awarded a penalty, and Boniface calmly converted from the spot, securing a dramatic 1-0 win. This victory not only propels the Germans to the top of Group G but also results in Qarabag’s elimination.
Boniface, with three Europa League goals this season, emerged as the hero for Leverkusen once again, showcasing his excellent form. While Leverkusen is undoubtedly pleased with the progression, they encountered a resilient challenge from their Azerbaijani opponents. Boniface’s late penalty ultimately broke Qarabag’s stubborn resistance, allowing the Bundesliga side to navigate through to the next round.
