Ben Murray Bruce, the former Bayelsa Senator and CEO of Silverbird Group, has expressed his disagreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress’s decision to implement a nationwide shutdown in response to the alleged mistreatment of their president, Joe Ajaero.
Earlier, as reported by PoliticsNow, the NLC had announced its intention to initiate a nationwide strike if the Imo state governor failed to address their demands. This move was prompted by the reported assault on the union’s president, Joe Ajaero, allegedly orchestrated by Governor Hope Uzodinma’s supporters and law enforcement officers last week.
Disagreeing with this course of action, Ben Murray Bruce argued that a nationwide strike, in response to an incident originating from Imo, was not in the best interest of Nigeria. The former senator suggested that such an action by the labor union could potentially undermine the economic progress achieved under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
“A nationwide strike, triggered by a localized issue in Imo, is not the solution that Nigeria currently requires. Reforms are yielding positive results, with the Naira responding favorably to these changes. Several banks are reporting record profits, and the manufacturing sector is showing signs of adaptation, which promises job creation. Disrupting the status quo at this juncture is not aligned with the national interest. Let us adopt a broader perspective that transcends personal interests and affiliations. Nigeria should not be jeopardized by a localized incident in Imo,” Ben Murray Bruce expressed in a tweet.
