In December 2021, at least 30 passengers on a bus in Sokoto state were burnt to death by bandits. Bello Turji, the 31-year-old terrorist leader later admitted that he gave the order for the gruesome murders.
Turji has led a series of other attacks against communities in North West states of Sokoto and Zamfara, where his gang members engage in raids, kidnap and plunder. They also impose levies on communities to access their farms.
Recently, Turji has started talking peace. A new video shows Turji confirming that he is willing for negotiations with both federal and state authorities. He claimed they have reached out to him.
Turji’s new twist in seeking peace was largely influenced by the fate that befell his cousin, Yellow Danbokolo.
Danbokolo, believed to be more callous than Turji, was killed during a shootout between his gang and a vigilante group, Shinkafi Volunteer Forces in Zamfara State. He died alongside about 170 of his fighters.
Many Nigerians expect that the only truce Turji deserves is to be given same treatment as his cousin.
