Barcelona’s woes continued on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw away at Rayo Vallecano. A late own goal from Rayo defender Florian Lejeune salvaged a point for Barcelona, but the dropped points now allow rivals Real Madrid and surprise package Girona the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Rayo Vallecano dominated the first half, with midfielder Unai Lopez smashing in a stunning left-footed volley from distance in the 39th minute. Barcelona struggled to create clear chances and entered halftime trailing by a goal.
The second half witnessed Barcelona launching numerous attacks in their quest for an equalizer. Despite efforts from Pedri, Ferran Torres, and Joao Cancelo, the breakthrough eluded them until Lejeune’s own goal in the 82nd minute under pressure from Robert Lewandowski. While the goal leveled the score, Barcelona couldn’t find a dramatic late winner.
The result leaves Barcelona trailing rivals Real Madrid by one point, with Real having a game in hand. Girona, the surprise package, can capitalize on Barcelona’s stumble to extend their lead at the top of La Liga. Manager Xavi will be disappointed that his side couldn’t convert their second-half dominance into a victory.
As the Spanish league season approaches its midway point, Barcelona faces a challenging task in overcoming teams above them to defend the La Liga trophy. Based on this performance, they must put in extra effort to avoid falling short when it matters most.
