Atiku, PDP file petition against Tinubu’s Presidential election victory
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has approached the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting at the Appeal Court in Abuja, to challenge the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the presidential election as President-elect.
This came hours after the Labour Party, LP, and its candidate, Mr Peter Obi, had similarly filed a petition at the Tribunal challenging Asiwaju Bola’s victory as the winner of the February 25, 2023, presidential election.
Atiku, through his team of lawyers led by Chief Joe Gadzama, argued that Tinubu’s election was invalid by reason of corrupt practices and by non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.
The petition had the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Tinubu, his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, and the APC as the 1st to 4th respondents.
He prayed the court to declare him the winner of the presidential election, having secured the second-highest number of lawful votes cast at the election.
INEC had on the 1st of this month, announced Tinubu as the winner of the presidential poll, ahead of 17 other candidates that contested the election.
It declared that Tinubu scored a total of 8,794,726 votes to defeat Atiku who polled a total of 6,984,520 votes and Obi who came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes.
