Appeal Court begins reading Judgment on Kaduna governorship election

The Court of Appeal has commenced delivering judgment on the Kaduna Governorship Election petition today, Friday, 24th November 2023.

The three member appeal panel led by Justice Daniel Kalio, announced yesterday that the judgment would commence 10am.

Other members of the panel include Justice James Abundaga and Justice Mohammed Baba Idris.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the 2023 election, Isah Ashiru, are challenging the victory of Uba Sani, the incumbent governor of Kaduna State.

They are also challenging the Kaduna State Governorship Election Tribunal which dismissed the petition against the victory of Uba Sani in September. The Tribunal had ruled that the pre-hearing notice was filed out of time, otherwise it would have ordered rerun in some polling units.

Sani, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the March 18 governorship election amid controversies.

The PDP had alleged that Sani’s votes in some of the local governments in Kaduna were inflated to cover for his deficits.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that Sani secured 730, 001 votes to defeat his closest rival Ashiru of the PDP, who scored 719, 196 votes. The margin of lead was a little over 10,000 votes.
