Aliyu Audu, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to explore the formation of six additional states across all geopolitical zones.
Audu, who is a member of the APC Presidential Transition Council’s Media Strategy Subcommittee, made the request on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television.
The party chieftain clarified that the increasing rural-urban migration would be reduced with the creation of more states.
Audu maintained that the large-scale migration of Nigerians to the metropolis in search of better opportunities has put an excessive load on some states, like Lagos.
“If we can take a bit of this pressure off Lagos by creating six other states in six geopolitical zones, that will reduce rural-urban migration, preventing people from leaving the North, the East and the West to Lagos,” he said.
“It balances up the states and to do this, you need more people, you need more hands, we need more processes,” he added.
