Rights group, Amnesty International, has tasked the President Bola Tinubu led government to investigate the security lapses that led Friday’s abduction of students of Federal University Gusau.
Making this request in a statement released on Sunday, the group asked the President Tinubu led government to do more to rescue the students still in custody of the insurgents.
“The Nigerian authorities must do more to rescue and return to safety all the dozens of — mostly female students — of Federal University Gusau abducted by gunmen in the early hours of Friday,” statement by Amnesty International read.
“Schools should be places of safety, and no person should have to choose between their education and their life. The Nigerian authorities have repeatedly claimed to be tackling the security situation in Zamfara state, but the ruthless activities of gunmen tell a different story. The Nigerian authorities must investigate the inexcusable security lapses that allowed this abduction to take place,” it added.
“The authorities appear to have learned nothing from the series of schools abductions that took place across northern part of Nigeria. The latest abduction clearly shows, there appears to be no framework in place to prevent further schools abductions.”
PoliticsNow had earlier reported that President Tinubu had already directed security agencies to immediately ensure that the remaining students still in custody of the insurgent group be rescued.
Recall that Boko Haram insurgents on Friday abducted students from Federal University of Gusau.
