The Albania national football team confirmed their spot in Euro 2024 with a 1-1 draw against Moldova in Group E on Friday night. The result keeps Moldova’s chances alive for a spot in the finals next summer.
Albania took the lead in the 25th minute when midfielder Taulant Seferi was fouled in the box by Moldova’s Ioan-Calin Revenco. Striker Sokol Cikalleshi converted the penalty, securing the bottom right corner.
Moldova intensified efforts for an equalizer in the second half, with Albania goalkeeper Etrit Berisha making crucial saves. In the 87th minute, Moldova substitute Vladyslav Baboglo scored from close range, delighting the home supporters.
Albania’s qualification campaign, starting with a 1-0 defeat in Poland in March, has since been impressive, going unbeaten with four wins and two draws, reaching 14 points atop the group. A win against the Faroe Islands on Monday will secure first place.
While qualification remains possible for Moldova, hopes are slim. Tied with Poland at 10 points and trailing the Czech Republic by one, they must win away against the Czech Republic on Monday. A Czech victory over Poland would extinguish Moldovan hopes.
