Akpabio denies move to impeach him

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has responded to the alleged plot by some senators to remove him from office and undermine the Senate.

Recall that over the weekend, certain media outlets stated that some senators had perfected their strategy for impeaching the president of the Senate in Saudi Arabia.

In response to this development, Akpabio issued a statement through his Special Adviser for Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, in which he stated that the Nigerian Senate was stable and unified under his leadership and could not be distracted by the slanderous accusations of the purveyors of political tar and feather by what appears to be a coordinated media attack from outside the National Assembly’s boundaries.

The reports, he claimed, were wholly made up stories that occasionally contained malicious intent to accomplish goals that senators had not yet fully grasped.

Noting that the Senate had since moved past the experience of the hotly contested leadership election, he claimed that the attempt to include senators who had initially opposed the emergence of the current leadership in a conspiracy that does not exist was unkind to them and unnecessary incense.

“Senators are presently concluding their holidays in their constituencies and other places they have chosen to spend their time after the rigours of the inauguration and ministerial screening and other constructive engagements.

“All senators are also refreshing themselves ahead of the resumption, therefore, any suggestions that they are presently engaged in other subversive plots against the institution is rather uncharitable.

“It is mostly uncharitable for those senators who initially did not support the emergence of the leadership but who have all unanimously endorsed the Senator Akpabio-led leadership. Continuing to link these senators with needless conspiracy with barely disguised innuendo is rather unkind.”
