The Africa Cup of Nations tournament saw its first matchday in Group F, as DR Congo took on Zambia. Brentford forward, Yoane Wissa, was instrumental in getting a 1-1 draw for DR Congo after they had gone behind in the first half.
DR Congo faced early pressure, as a calamitous mix-up in defence allowed Zambia’s Kings Kangwa to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. However, Wissa responded swiftly for DR Congo, turning in a ball across goal just four minutes later to equalise.
Wissa nearly put Congo ahead shortly after but his effort was cleared spectacularly off the line by Zambia’s Rodrick Kabwe.
The second half saw DR Congo take control of the match, but they were unable to capitalise on chances to take the lead. Their best opportunity came from a handball by Zambia’s Tandi Mwape in the box but VAR overturned the initial penalty decision. As the match wound down, DR Congo striker Silas blazed a late chance over the bar, and the teams ultimately settled for a 1-1 draw.
Both sides now trail Group F leaders Morocco after the first round of matches at AFCON 2024. However, Wissa’s quick response shows DR Congo have the firepower to advance to the knockout round if they can build on this result.
