Nigeria received a massive boost to their chances of progressing to the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations final on Tuesday, as star striker, Victor Osimhen, was declared fit for Wednesday’s semi-final clash against South Africa. Osimhen, the reigning African Footballer of the Year, had previously been an injury doubt after missing the Super Eagles’ travel to match venue Bouaké due to a stomach complaint.
The Napoli striker’s availability had been uncertain in the build-up to the penultimate match of the continental showpiece. Osimhen has been pivotal to Nigeria’s AFCON campaign thus far, directly contributing to most of the team’s six goals. His relentless running and exceptional work rate make him an invaluable member of Jose Peseiro’s squad.
After initially staying back in Abidjan for treatment by team doctors, Osimhen made the trip to join up with his Nigeria teammates on Tuesday. He successfully came through a training session in Bouaké to prove his fitness for the clash. The 24-year-old’s participation against South Africa had hinged on getting medical clearance, which has been provided.
His availability will come as a big relief for Nigeria fans and coach Peseiro. Had he missed out, the Super Eagles would have had to rely on the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi to lead the line. Now, Nigeria will be able to field Osimhen from the start as they aim to unlock his scoring and book their place in Sunday’s final.
The fitness update will also be warmly welcomed by Napoli, with Osimhen a key player in their Serie A title defense. Nigeria will face South Africa in the AFCON semi-finals on Wednesday at 6pm.
