Senator Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, has approved the payment of another batch of half-salary arrears owed by the administration of one of his predecessors, Rauf Aregbesola
The measure is part of Adeleke’s efforts to pay state workers’ salary debts and support them in accordance with a governorship campaign commitment made in 2022.
Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesperson, stated this in a statement made accessible to press on Saturday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The latest half-salary arrears settlement would be the governor’s third in accordance with the pattern released earlier this year to pay the debts on a quarterly basis.
The first and second quarter payments have already been made by the administration, and the third quarter payment will be sent to employees along with their July wage.
Last year, Adeleke promised voters that he would make the salary arrears payments in installments. Following the previous administration, the current one inherited debts linked to pensions of roughly N50 billion and approximately N26 billion in half-salary arrears.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to the proper application of the template for the payment of the inherited salary arrears in his response to the approval, noting that the template represented a consensus among all stakeholders on how to end the half-salary cliché.
“I want to assure Osun workers that the payment is progressing as scheduled. Despite the tight fiscal situation, we are prioritising workers’ welfare by paying the inherited debt on an instalment basis,” he said.
“As a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, we will remain focused on human development even as we work to upgrade our infrastructure and develop our local economy.”
