Luton Town stunned Brighton and Hove Albion with a 4-0 drubbing at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday night, to lift themselves out of the English Premier League relegation zone. Striker Elijah Adebayo was the hat-trick hero, bagging his first top-flight treble to secure a vital three points for the Hatters.
Luton got off to a flyer when Adebayo headed them in front after just 20 seconds. The home side then incredibly went 2-0 up with less than 3 minutes on the clock as winger Chiedozie Ogbene doubled their advantage. Adebayo grabbed his second of the match right before halftime to give Luton a commanding 3-0 lead at the break. He then completed his hat-trick from a corner in the 56th minute to round off an emphatic victory.
The result sees Luton rise to 17th in the table, a point above the drop zone. Meanwhile, Brighton remain in 8th position after a night to forget. Prior to kickoff, there was an emotional moment as Luton captain Tom Lockyer, recovering from a recent cardiac arrest, walked pitchside to applause from the crowd.
The scoreline enters the English Premier League history books, with only Leicester City previously scoring 2 goals quicker from the start of a match. After a difficult start to the 2024 season, Luton have now given themselves hope of avoiding relegation back to the second tier.
