Veteran actor Denzel Washington celebrated a spiritual milestone on Saturday by receiving both baptism and a minister’s license in a heartfelt ceremony.
The event took place at Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York City, and was livestreamed by the First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York, allowing fans and followers to witness the moment.
Approaching his 70th birthday, the two-time Academy Award winner took the opportunity to reflect on his journey of faith and the transformative moments that have shaped his life.
“In one week, I turn 70. It took a while, but I’m here,” Washington said during the service, expressing deep gratitude for the unwavering support of his wife, Pauletta Washington, who was present to share in the occasion.
He also recounted a life-changing prophecy he received at the age of 20 from Ruth Green, a woman he met at his mother’s beauty parlor. “She said, ‘Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people,’” Washington recalled.
He continued, “My mother wrote the word ‘prophecy.’ Fifty years later, look at God. If He can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you.”
Washington’s steadfast Christian faith has long been a central part of his public persona, even as religion remains a less common topic in Hollywood.
In a recent essay for Esquire, Washington affirmed his commitment to sharing his beliefs, stating, “I’m unafraid. I don’t care what anyone thinks… It’s not fashionable. It’s not sexy. But that doesn’t mean people in Hollywood don’t believe.”
Reflecting on his official induction into ministry, Washington expressed a profound sense of purpose and divine guidance. “It took a while, but I’m here,” he reiterated, crediting his faith journey to God’s plan and the steadfast support of his “loving, faithful wife.”
